Unlocking Global Markets with Pomegranate Export
Pomegranate Export Resumes to US

India's foray into pomegranate exports to the U.S. through a commercial trial shipment signifies a pivotal moment in its agriculture sector's journey towards global prominence. Orchestrated under the guidance of the Agricultural Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and carried out by InI Farms, this venture not only showcases India's commitment to expanding its agricultural exports but also highlights its potential impact on the global pomegranate export price and its position among pomegranate exporting countries. This strategic move is part of India's broader ambition to become a top player in the global pomegranate market, capitalizing on its vast production capabilities and the high-quality varieties it offers.

Expanding India's Reach in Pomegranate Export

India's decision to initiate pomegranate exports to the U.S. via sea route is a testament to its agricultural and logistical advancements. This decision followed the successful air shipment of pomegranates, which set the stage for expanding trade relations to potential markets. With over 4,200 boxes (12.6 tons) shipped by InI Farms, India is not just opening a new chapter in its export narrative. Still, it is also positioning itself as a formidable competitor in the global arena.

Pomegranate Export by the Numbers

  • Annual Growth: Pomegranate production and export have a healthy annual growth rate of 20%-25%.
  • Major Producing States: Maharashtra leads with over 50% production share, followed by Gujarat, Karnataka, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh.
  • Export Figures: In the fiscal year 2022-23, India exported over 60,000 tonnes of pomegranates, mainly to the UAE, the Netherlands, Oman, and Bahrain.

India Among Top Pomegranate Exporting Countries

While India is one of the largest producers of pomegranates, strategic initiatives and quality improvements mark its journey to becoming one of the leading pomegranate-exporting countries. Countries like Iran, Turkey, and Spain have traditionally dominated this market. However, India's unique position of offering pomegranates year-round, with its focus on quality and implementing advanced agricultural practices, is gradually altering the global market dynamics.

Pomegranate Export Price

The premium received by farmers for pomegranates intended for export is notably higher—20% more compared to other export markets and 35% more than the domestic market. This price incentive is crucial for enhancing the quality and quantity of pomegranate production tailored for international markets.

Expanding India's Reach in Pomegranate Export

Ensuring Quality Meets Global Standards

The journey of a pomegranate from the farms of Maharashtra to markets across the globe is fraught with challenges, primarily related to maintaining quality standards that meet global expectations. InI Farms, at the forefront of this initiative, has worked extensively to enhance the shelf life and quality of Indian pomegranates. Their efforts, from farm registrations and farmer training to developing sea protocol and static trials for shelf life extension, are pivotal in ensuring that Indian pomegranates stand tall in the international markets.

Leveraging the Export Portal for Global Trade

The successful export of pomegranates to the U.S. is a milestone for India and a beacon for its agricultural export potential. As Indian pomegranates make their way globally, leveraging platforms like the Export Portal becomes instrumental. This digital platform facilitates international trade and provides Indian farmers and exporters a gateway to the global market, ensuring that the fruits of their labour are recognized and valued worldwide. With the right strategies and continued focus on quality and market expansion, India can redefine its position in the global pomegranate exporting countries, influencing the pomegranate export price and setting new benchmarks in agricultural exports.
