Spice trade played a major role in medieval times, as spices were a rare and luxurious product. In fact, spice trade contributed to the development of Eastern Countries such as  India, China, Persia and Arabia. Spice were known in South Asia and Middle East since 2000 BCE, while Europe discovered the spice trade in the 15th century, when long distance sailing became possible. The US started to explore the world of spices in the 18th century, when local business people established their own spice companies. 

India is considered the center of spice origins, and it is the largest exporter of herbs and spices. Other major spice producers are China, Turkey, Pakistan.

Spices can be found in a variety of forms: fresh, whole and dried. The most commonly used spices are cinnamon, parsley, cardamom, rosemary, cumin, curry, basil, cilantro, oregano, nutmegs, star anise, red/black peppers. Spices protect against certain diseases such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Also, adding spices in your meals may bring new flavors to your diet!
