How eCommerce is Booming in French-Canadian Cities

According to Acomba, a technology and accounting network based in Quebec, 58 percent of Quebeckers make at least one purchase online in the year. Staff analysts estimate that 62 percent of men purchased online, while 54 per cent of women followed suit. Those who purchased the most online at 73 percent were between the ages of 18 and 34 years old.

The Quebec government has also taken measures to grow the Franco-Canadian metropolis’ digital presence, specifically in the way of arts and innovation.

In 2013, the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS) and McGill University founded the Quartier de l’innovation — an innovation ecosystem of experimentation and collaboration between academic researchers, entrepreneurs, and residents.

Québec numérique, launched in 2014, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of arts and culture via technology.

The non-profit organization has several projects underway that promote the digitalization of enterprises. For a week in April 2019, Québec numérique collaborated with the organization La Semaine numériQC, an organization working with the City of Quebec to share expert knowledge in the realm of technology and digitization with professional communities, to bring awareness of the opportunities in the digital age for Quebeckers. The week’s events hosted workshops on cybersecurity such as SéQCure and Forum des innovations culturelles (FIC) to bring tech professionals into dialogue with each other.

In the same week, Québec numérique collaborated with Les Événements eCommerce, Québec numérique created La Journée eCommerce to encourage more Quebec enterprises to engage in e-commerce.

The Conseil québécois du commerce de detail (CQCD), an organization that represents 70 percent of retail-related economic activity in Quebec, will be hosting its annual e-Commerce Conference on October 1 and 2 this year.

At the e-Commerce Conference in 2018, CMO at L’Oréal Canada Stéphanie Binette spoke about the importance of Quebec merchants responding to their customers’ needs in the digital age where online purchases are the norm.
