Since the late 20th century into the early 21st century, one of the significant failings of business and the global economy writ large has been operating on a false dichotomy: the environment or the economy. For too long, we’ve been told that it has to be one or the other. Saving the environment means economic sacrifices and vice versa. But this is not true, and more and more businesses are learning the benefits of sustainability. Green manufacturing is set to be the way forward. In truth, green manufacturing must be the way forward. And the sooner your business gets on the green manufacturing train, the better.
And therein lies the first benefit of green manufacturing. It sets your business up to succeed in the future. In your given industry, maybe you can afford to continue manufacturing as you have been for a few more years. Perhaps your industry is not yet the focus of green initiatives, but it will be soon. It would be best if you were exploring what your green manufacturing options are now so that you are prepared for the inevitable changes that the future holds. To do anything else would be procrastination, and when has that ever been a good idea?
As we’ve seen with proposed “Green New Deals” in various countries, the changes required in the coming years and decades will be massive. While these deals are generally more loose frameworks as opposed to actual tabled legislation, they have strong support, both from the general public and from environmental scientists and other experts. Now, let’s not pretend that such proposals have unanimous support. While the threat of climate change has reached a near-unanimous scientific consensus, an agreement among the general public remains a distant dream. But there is a crucial difference. Even the most vocal of climate skeptics don’t go out of their way to buy products manufactured in environmentally deleterious ways. But the situation on the other end of the spectrum is different.
Consumers are showing increasing desires to purchase products that were manufactured in an environmentally sustainable manner. Therefore, not only does switching to a more sustainable model means your business is better prepared to sail the stormy seas of the near future, but it also gives you a secure attribute for your marketing platform. If you’re able to boast that your business operates on an environmentally stable model, you are reasonably likely to be able to increase your customer base. This is even true if the switch in manufacturing results in a slight uptick in prices.
